I’m from Postville, IA, and agriculture has been a part of my life since day one. Growing up on a dairy farm set the stage for a lifelong journey in the ag world. I initially went to college to become a teacher, but after a year, I realized it wasn’t for me.
Instead, my career path took me through various roles in agriculture – from working as a hired man and feed mill employee to owning a feed store, managing grain elevators in Maxwell, IA, and Elwood, NE, and even managing a wholesale distributor of feed and animal health supplies. I’ve also been involved in DTN sales and have worked as a marketing consultant since 1990. My passion for agriculture is the common thread that ties my diverse experiences together.

My journey into crop insurance was quite accidental. My background as a commodity broker came in handy when I helped a crop insurance agent explain Revenue Protection. However, when it was claimed that I was selling insurance without a license, I quickly rectified this by completing 12 hours of training, passing a test, and paying a $50 fee.

Aside from my professional life, I have a few hobbies that keep me busy. Golfing is one of my favorite pastimes. I’m also an avid reader and was very active in my church for many years, though I’ve been less involved over the past five. Through all these experiences, my love for agriculture and my community has only grown stronger.
